"Siemens Mobility Delivers Initial Batch of 70 Mireo Regional and Long-Distance Trains to ÖBB" |
Austrian Federal Railways Places €800 Million Order for 70 Siemens Mobility Trains
Austrian FederalRailways (ÖBB) has initiated the first order for 70 trains as part of the 2023
framework agreement secured by Siemens Mobility in late summer 2023. Valued at
over €800 million, the trains, based on the proven Mireo electric
multiple-units platform, are scheduled for delivery in three versions starting
from late 2027.
The Mireo trains, known
for their success in Europe, are designed to operate at speeds up to 160 km/h
and offer a range of passenger amenities, including air conditioning, WiFi
service, barrier-free access, electrical plugs, ski and snowboard racks, space
for buggies and wheelchairs near doors, and designated areas for bicycles.
Notably, the new trains will feature wider cars than previous Mireo models,
enhancing the overall passenger experience.
Siemens Mobility
introduces a novel design aspect with inner bearing bogies as a single car
concept for the first time in these new trains, contributing to increased
passenger comfort and convenience. Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility,
expressed pride in delivering this development to ÖBB, emphasizing the
partnership's strength and trust.
Andreas Matthä, ÖBB
CEO, highlighted the order's significance, stating, "With the additional
70 multiple-unit trains, we are consistently continuing our investment program
in a modern fleet.
The order includes
eleven 73-meter-long local trains, 28 106-meter-long trains for various federal
regions, and 31 trainsets with a length of 106 meters for long-distance
transport within the Alps. Siemens Mobility's advanced European Train Control
System [ETCS] will be employed for train control, facilitating shorter
intervals on busy routes when combined with appropriate infrastructure.
The Mireo trains
feature lightweight construction, low energy consumption, and environmentally
friendly components. The aluminum car bodies and innovative lightweight
construction technology for the inner bearing bogies contribute to
sustainability. The SF7500 bogies, developed at Siemens Mobility's competence
center in Graz, provide enhanced handling, optimized acceleration, and
increased spatial efficiency for passengers.
Manufacturing of the
Mireo trains, including state-of-the-art bogies, will take place within Siemens
Mobility's global network of train manufacturing facilities, with the bogies
specifically manufactured at the competence center in Graz. The order reflects
ÖBB's commitment to a modern, sustainable fleet and Siemens Mobility's
dedication to providing cutting-edge rail solutions.
The design is so intuitive, it feels like it's playing my favorite tune!
