"The Unexplained Codelco – SQM Agreement" |
Codelco has not provided any calculations
explaining the fundamentals of its negotiation, stated the Progresa Foundation
in a document where they called for the temporary suspension of the contracts
announced for March. They urged a more detailed analysis of the agreement. The
Progresa Foundation released a document titled "The Unexplainable Codelco
- SQM Agreement," expressing its position on the deal between the
state-owned company and Soquimich for lithium exploitation in northern Chile.
The document, authored by its president, economist Camilo Lagos
Miranda, former coordinator of the Executive Secretariat of the National
Lithium Commission convened in 2014 by then-President Michelle Bachelet,
analyzes and questions Codelco's motivation for signing the agreement. It seems
that the current authorities prioritized short-term results over an analysis of
the long-term benefits of the business," Lagos noted.
The Progresa Foundation's document also addresses the current
legal situation faced by SQM. "It is noteworthy that the authorities
promoted and celebrated an agreement with a company currently in a legal
dispute for not paying specific mining taxes since 2020," the text points
out.
Considering these concerns and more, the
Progresa Foundation expressed that "given the magnitude of the business in
the Salar de Atacama, it would be prudent to temporarily suspend the signing of
contracts announced for March. A more detailed analysis of the agreement is
necessary, understanding Codelco's calculations justifying the association with
SQM on such advantageous terms, and transparently evaluating whether it is
indeed the best deal."
